Chemistry unit 1
A synthetic weak acid HA is being recovered from water. Only neutral HA enters an organic solvent. Its distribution ratio is [HA]organic/[HA]water = 6. In water, [A-]/[HA] = 10^(pH - 5). Both layers have the same volume, and the aqueous pH is held constant by a separate buffer. HA and A- interconvert rapidly. No solute is destroyed. A single extraction starts with all of the acid in water. Treat concentrations as ideal.
