Chemistry unit 12

A chiral substrate S exists as R and S configurations; call them R-form and S-form to avoid confusing the substrate name. Route I replaces a leaving group by a single backside displacement, producing inversion at the stereocentre. Route II passes through a planar intermediate attacked equally from either face, producing a 1:1 product mixture. Product configuration labels are stipulated to switch under inversion. A starting sample is 80% R-form and 20% S-form. Both forms react equally fast; no kinetic resolution occurs.
