What percentage is a grade 9 in GCSE Maths?
On Edexcel Higher, grade 9 needed 208 out of 240 in June 2026, which is 87%. Across the standard series since 2018 it has needed between 197 and 217 marks, 82% to 90%.
What percentage is a grade 4 in GCSE Maths?
It depends on the tier. On Higher, grade 4 needed 50 out of 240 (21%) in June 2026; on Foundation it needed 151 (63%). Higher questions are harder, which is why its boundaries are lower.
Do I need to pass each paper?
No. Only the total out of 240 counts. A weak paper can be made up on the others.
Can I get a grade 6 on Foundation?
No. Foundation awards grades 1 to 5, so the highest grade on Foundation is 5 however many marks you score.
What happens if I do badly on Higher?
Higher awards grades 4 to 9, with a grade 3 allowed a little below the grade 4 boundary. Below the grade 3 boundary the result is U. In June 2026 the Higher grade 3 boundary was 34 out of 240.

Pearson Edexcel GCSE (9-1) Mathematics (1MA1), Foundation and Higher tiers, every June series from 2018 to 2026 except 2020 and 2021 (no exams), and November 2023, 2024 and 2025.
Method
- Add the marks you enter for Papers 1, 2 and 3 (each out of 80) to get a total out of 240, or take the total you type.
- For each series, find the highest grade whose boundary your total reaches. A boundary is the lowest total that gets that grade.
- For papers not yet sat, the marks needed are the target boundary minus the marks you already have. If that is more than 80 for each paper left, the target was out of reach in that series.
- The range leaves out June 2022, which was graded more generously on purpose as a step back to normal after the pandemic.

How sure is it?
- Across the standard series since 2018, the Higher grade 4 boundary ran from 42 to 53 and the grade 7 boundary from 137 to 156.
- On Foundation the grade 4 boundary ran from 136 to 151 and the grade 5 boundary from 169 to 184.
- Your exam's boundaries are unknown until results day, so treat the range as the honest answer, not any single series.
If your total clears a grade in every series, it has been enough every time so far. If it clears a grade in some series and not others, you are close to that boundary. It cannot predict next summer's boundaries, turn a mock mark into a grade with certainty, or tell you anything about how a paper will be marked.
