Kent Test practice papers and a plan from Year 4
Start with KCC's familiarisation paper and GL's free materials. The Kent Test covers English, maths and reasoning, plus a writing task.
The papers
English and maths share a one-hour paper, 25 minutes each. Reasoning takes about an hour, with short timed non-verbal sections. Writing takes 40 minutes; it is not scored but can inform headteacher assessment.
A Year 4 week
| Session | Try together | Look for |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | Explain one character's decision in a short passage. | Can your child point to the words? |
| Number | One fraction, measure or multi-step problem. | Can they explain the unit? |
| Patterns | Describe what changes before naming the next item. | Does the rule fit every step? |
| Writing | Plan and write one short scene. | A clear change and an ending. |
One problem to discuss
Worked example Add fractions of a litre
Two jugs hold 3/5 litre and 7/10 litre. You pour both into a container, then use 1/4 litre. How much remains?
Answer: 3/5 + 7/10 = 13/10. In twentieths: 26/20 − 5/20 = 21/20 litres, or 1.05 litres.
The trap: Adding numerators and denominators combines unequal parts.
Year 5: build to timed papers
- Target the errors you see.
- Use familiarisation to rehearse instructions and the answer sheet.
- After a timed set, review one decision before starting another.
