A catheter conversation and fear of losing control

Setting: A urology ward

A patient has a catheter under a documented treatment plan and wants to remove it independently. The team has scheduled a review; the nurse may discuss discomfort and request an earlier assessment.

Task

  • Explore the concern behind the opening: "I want this tube out now. I hate needing help for something so private."
  • Clarify the specific barrier and acknowledge its effect on the patient.
  • Explain the supplied next steps and respond to this possible question: "If I tell you about the discomfort, will you simply say I have to put up with it?"
  • Check the patient can distinguish what is agreed from what needs confirmation.
A catheter conversation and fear of losing control supplied plan
  • A patient has a catheter under a documented treatment plan and wants to remove it independently. The team has scheduled a review; the nurse may discuss discomfort and request an earlier assessment.
  • The nurse will assess the reported discomfort through the ward's current process and contact the treating team about the requested review.
  • The catheter remains under the documented plan until the responsible team reviews it; the nurse can arrange privacy during care.
  • Do not give removal instructions or promise immediate removal; this role-play concerns communication and escalation only.
  • I would like to hear more about the discomfort and have it assessed through the ward process. We can also arrange privacy during catheter care immediately.
  • The current plan includes a review of whether the catheter is still needed. I can pass on your request for that review; I cannot promise removal or decide that plan within this conversation.
