The rules

Which civics test do I take?

It depends on when USCIS received your Form N-400. Before October 20, 2025: the 2008 test, up to 10 of 100 questions with 6 right to pass. On or after October 20, 2025: the 2025 test, up to 20 of 128 questions with 12 right to pass.

What is the 65/20 rule?

If you are 65 or older and have been a permanent resident for 20 or more years when you file, you study 20 marked questions. The officer asks 10 and you need 6 right. You may take the test in the language of your choice.

What are the 50/20 and 55/15 rules?

If you are 50 or older with 20 years as a permanent resident, or 55 or older with 15 years, when you file, you do not take the English test. You still take the civics test, and may take it in your own language with an interpreter.
