The Common Entrance maths Core papers

Two 60-minute papers worth 100 marks each, one with a calculator and one without, plus the 10-minute mental arithmetic test.

How the questions build

Each paper starts with short questions and builds to longer ones of several parts. Later questions mix topics and include unfamiliar problems where you choose the method.

Working earns method marks, so a slip in the arithmetic can still keep most of the marks.

Questions that come up again and again

  • Fractions of an amount, then a fraction of what is left
  • Sharing in a ratio when you know the difference, not the total
  • Forming an equation from angles or a perimeter
  • Interior and exterior angles of regular polygons
  • A missing value from a mean

The mental test

40 written questions in 10 minutes, one mark each, no working marks. It rewards quick, reliable number facts more than anything else.
