Norcott Co's original standard for product Z was 4 kg of material at $5.00 a kg. After the budget was set, a worldwide shortage raised the market price to $5.60 a kg, and a design change that a customer required, outside the production manager's control, raised the material needed to 4.2 kg a unit. Norcott Co revised the standard for both.
In June Norcott Co made 2,000 units, using 8,600 kg bought at $5.75 a kg.
Norcott Co calculates the planning variance as the revised standard cost of the actual output less the original standard cost of the actual output, and calculates operational variances against the revised standard.
What is the total material planning variance for June, in $? Enter an adverse variance as a negative figure. (2 marks)
