| Attempts | 3 on one application; no wait to retake |
| CLP | Up to 180 days, renewable once, no more than 1 year in all |
| Time to allow | 2 to 3 hours for all tests |
Which tests you take
- General knowledge: all applicants.

- Combination vehicles: to drive combination vehicles.
- Passenger transport for bus drivers, and tank, doubles, hazardous materials, school bus and firefighter tests as needed. Triple trailers are not legal in California.
Testing rules
Testing aids are banned, including the handbook itself and phones or watches. Use of one, or a substitute test taker, marks the test as a failure. Passed skills test segments count only during the CLP's first 180 days.
