The AP Chemistry exam in 2027

3 hours 15 minutes in two sections, each worth half the score: 60 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, then 7 free-response questions in 105 minutes. You read the questions in the Bluebook app and handwrite free-response answers in a paper booklet.

Section I60 multiple-choice questions, 90 minutes, 50% of the score
Section II7 free-response questions, 105 minutes, 50% of the score

The two sections

  • Section I: 60 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes. Some stand alone; others come in sets built around the same data or stimulus.
  • Section II: 7 free-response questions in 105 minutes: 3 long questions worth 10 points each and 4 short questions worth 4 points each, 46 points in all.
  • It is a hybrid digital exam: you read every question in Bluebook, and you write free-response answers by hand in a paper booklet.
  • A calculator is allowed on both sections; College Board recommends a scientific or graphing one. The periodic table and the equations and constants sheet are provided.

The nine units and their weights

  • Unit 1: Atomic Structure and Properties, 7–9% of Section I
  • Unit 2: Compound Structure and Properties, 7–9%
  • Unit 3: Properties of Substances and Mixtures, 18–22%
  • Unit 4: Chemical Reactions, 7–9%
  • Unit 5: Kinetics, 7–9%
  • Unit 6: Thermochemistry, 7–9%
  • Unit 7: Equilibrium, 7–9%
  • Unit 8: Acids and Bases, 11–15%
  • Unit 9: Thermodynamics and Electrochemistry, 7–9%

Pacing

Section I gives you 90 seconds a question. In Section II, plan about 23 minutes for each long question and 9 minutes for each short one. Answer every part: free-response points are earned one at a time, so a later part can still score after a slip earlier on.
