The 8-mark discussion

  • Level 1 (1 to 2): relevant points, not developed.
  • Level 2 (3 to 5): developed analysis, but one-sided.
  • Level 3 (6 to 8): both sides developed, with a reasoned conclusion.

Explain and analyse

One mark to identify a point, then a mark for each link of reasoning you write out.

Questions people ask

How long should an 8-mark answer be?

Long enough to develop two sides and conclude: about a page in the exam.

Do I need diagrams?

Some questions ask for one. Market failure and market structure need none.
