Questions people ask

How many hours do successful Level I candidates study?

CFA Institute says successful candidates report spending over 300 hours on average preparing for each level. It is an average, not a minimum or a guarantee.

Can I pass Level I in three months?

Three months is about 13 weeks. Reaching 300 hours in that time takes about 23 hours a week, plus time for the Practical Skills Module. Enter your own numbers above to see the gap.

Does the Practical Skills Module count toward the exam?

No. It is not examined, but CFA Institute requires it to be completed before your result is released, and its policy estimates 10 to 20 hours. You can finish it after the exam.

Which topics deserve the most hours in 2027?

The widest 2027 ranges are Ethics (10 to 15%), Quantitative Methods, Financial Statement Analysis, Equities and Fixed Income (each 11 to 14%), then Portfolio Construction (8 to 12%).

Can I defer my Level I exam?

Not for a fee from the February 2027 exams. CFA Institute is ending paid deferrals: if you do not sit, you lose your registration fee and register again for a later exam at the rate then. Emergency deferrals remain. Moving your appointment inside the same window is a separate rule.

How we work this out

What it does

Enter your exam window, start date and weekly hours to see your hours against the reported 300-hour average, a topic split and a week-by-week plan.

Level I windows from November 2026 (2026 curriculum) to November 2027 (2027 curriculum), with CFA Institute's registration and scheduling deadlines where it has published them.

Method

  1. Weeks available are the full weeks from your start date to the first day of the exam window.
  2. Hours available are weeks times your weekly hours. We keep 10, 15 or 20 hours for the Practical Skills Module (CFA Institute's policy estimates 10 to 20) and compare the rest with the reported average of over 300 hours.
  3. Foundations get 15, 6 or 0 hours for a reader new to finance, with some finance or with a finance degree or job, and the final review keeps 15% of the rest for mixed review and timed mocks. Both shares are our editorial choices.
  4. The remaining hours are split across the ten topics in proportion to the midpoints of the selected year's official weight ranges, then laid out week by week in this course's teaching order.
