SyllabusThe syllabus for examination from 2015, examined again in 2027

Which syllabus applies to 2027

A revised mathematics specification was planned for fifth years from September 2027, and its introduction has been postponed. Students who started fifth year in September 2025 sit the syllabus for examination from 2015.

The five strands

Strand 1, Statistics and Probability; Strand 2, Geometry and Trigonometry; Strand 3, Number; Strand 4, Algebra; Strand 5, Functions. Calculus is part of Strand 5.

How this course is organised

We split the strands into eleven topics: six for the number, algebra and functions questions usually set on Paper 1, and five for the statistics, probability, geometry and trigonometry usually set on Paper 2.

Questions people ask

Is the new Leaving Cert Maths specification examined in 2027?

No. Its introduction was postponed from September 2027, so the June 2027 examination follows the syllabus for examination from 2015.

Is there a project or coursework in Maths?

No. Higher Level Maths is assessed by two written papers.

Do I have to learn the formulae?

Many are in the Formulae and Tables booklet you are given in the exam, but not all. You still need to know when to use each one and how to derive the trigonometric formulae the syllabus lists.
