The two sections

  • Section I: 60 multiple-choice questions in 70 minutes, two thirds of the exam score.
  • Section II: 3 free-response questions in 60 minutes, including a 10-minute reading period: 1 long question worth 10 points and 2 short questions worth 5 points each. Together they are a third of the score.
  • Free-response questions ask you to make claims, explain them, calculate, and draw correctly labeled graphs.
  • It is a hybrid digital exam: you read every question in Bluebook, and you write free-response answers by hand in a paper booklet.
  • A four-function calculator is allowed on both sections.

The six units and their weights

  • Unit 1: Basic Economic Concepts, 5–10% of Section I
  • Unit 2: Economic Indicators and the Business Cycle, 12–17%
  • Unit 3: National Income and Price Determination, 17–27%
  • Unit 4: Financial Sector, 18–23%
  • Unit 5: Long-Run Consequences of Stabilization Policies, 20–30%
  • Unit 6: Open Economy: International Trade and Finance, 10–13%

Pacing

Section I gives you 70 seconds a question. In Section II, use the 10-minute reading period to plan your graphs, then spend about 25 minutes on the long question and about 12 minutes on each short one. Answer every part: free-response points are earned one at a time, so a later part can still score after a slip earlier on.
