The twenty Chemistry units

  • Physical chemistry, Units 1 to 8: basic concepts, atomic structure, bonding, thermodynamics, solutions, equilibrium, redox and electrochemistry, and kinetics.
  • Inorganic chemistry, Units 9 to 12: periodicity, the p-block, the d- and f-block, and coordination compounds.
  • Organic chemistry, Units 13 to 20: purification and analysis, basic principles, hydrocarbons, compounds with halogens, oxygen and nitrogen, biomolecules, and principles related to practical chemistry.

How the paper is set

  • 180 compulsory questions in 180 minutes: Physics 45, Chemistry 45 and Biology 90.
  • Four options per question, with one correct or most appropriate answer: +4 for a correct answer, minus 1 for an incorrect one, and 0 for a question left blank.
  • A pen-and-paper test in one shift, offered in 13 mediums; where a translation is unclear, the English version is final.

Where Chemistry questions come from

On our practice papers physical chemistry gives 20 of the 45 questions, organic 15 and inorganic 10, so the planner spends hours the same way. NTA publishes no weighting by unit; ours follows how much of the syllabus each unit covers.

Try 2 questions

Question 1
A 10.0 g mixture of sodium carbonate and sodium hydrogencarbonate is heated until its mass is constant. Only the hydrogencarbonate decomposes, 2 NaHCO₃ → Na₂CO₃ + H₂O + CO₂, and both gases escape, so the mass falls by 1.55 g. What is the percentage by mass of NaHCO₃ in the mixture? (Molar masses: NaHCO₃ 84, H₂O 18, CO₂ 44 g mol⁻¹.)
Question 2
An alkene C₆H₁₂ gives propanone and propanal on ozonolysis (O₃, then zinc and water). The alkene is then treated with HBr in the absence of peroxide. What is the major product?

Questions people ask

How many Chemistry questions are in NEET?

45 of the 180 questions, all compulsory. They are worth 180 of the 720 marks.

Is there negative marking?

Yes. A correct answer earns 4 marks, an incorrect one loses 1, and a question left blank scores 0.

Is a calculator allowed?

No. NEET (UG) is a pen-and-paper test, so every calculation in this course is set to be worked by hand.
