The AP Physics 1 exam in 2027
3 hours in two sections, each worth half the score: 42 multiple-choice questions in 85 minutes, then 4 free-response questions in 95 minutes. From May 2027 Section I has two more questions and five more minutes than before, and Section II five minutes less.
| Section I | 42 multiple-choice questions, 85 minutes, 50% of the score |
|---|---|
| Section II | 4 free-response questions, 95 minutes, 50% of the score |
| Calculator | Four-function, scientific or graphing, on both sections |
| Date | Wednesday, May 5, 2027, Session 2 |
The two sections
- Section I: 42 multiple-choice questions in 85 minutes, each with four options. Some stand alone; others come in sets built around the same data or set-up.
- Section II: 4 free-response questions in 95 minutes, one of each type: Mathematical Routines, Translation Between Representations, Experimental Design and Analysis, and Qualitative/Quantitative Translation.
- It is a hybrid digital exam: you read every question in Bluebook, and you write free-response answers by hand in a paper booklet.
- A four-function, scientific or graphing calculator is allowed on both sections, and the equation sheet is provided in Bluebook and on paper.
The eight units and their weights
- Unit 1: Kinematics, 10–15% of Section I
- Unit 2: Force and Translational Dynamics, 18–23%
- Unit 3: Work, Energy, and Power, 18–23%
- Unit 4: Linear Momentum, 10–15%
- Unit 5: Torque and Rotational Dynamics, 10–15%
- Unit 6: Energy and Momentum of Rotating Systems, 5–8%
- Unit 7: Oscillations, 5–8%
- Unit 8: Fluids, 10–15%
Pacing
Section I gives you just over 2 minutes a question. Section II gives you about 24 minutes a question; the Translation Between Representations question carries the most points, 12, so give it a little more. Answer every part: free-response points are earned one at a time, so a later part can still score after a slip earlier on.
