AP Physics 2

AP Physics 2 free-response questions: the four types

Four questions, one of each type, worth 40 points and half the exam score.

Questions4, one of each type
Points10, 12, 10 and 8 (40 in all)
Time95 minutes for all four
Weight50% of the exam score

What each type asks

  • Mathematical Routines, 10 points: diagram, derive, calculate, predict.
  • Translation Between Representations, 12 points: a diagram, equation and graph that agree.
  • Experimental Design and Analysis, 10 points: plan, linearize, use the slope.
  • Qualitative/Quantitative Translation, 8 points: argue in words, then derive.

Earning each point

  • Derive from a principle or the sheet, symbolically.
  • Label every component, ray and axis; state directions in words.
  • Answer every part; later parts still score after a slip.

Question 1
A student measures the current I in a resistor for several potential differences ΔV across it and plots the data, as shown. Which statement about the resistor is best supported by the graph?
Question 2
Table of capacitance against plate separation for fixed plate area. Separation 1.0 mm: 177 pF. Separation 2.0 mm: 88.5 pF. Separation 4.0 mm: 44.2 pF.
