AP Physics C free-response questions: the four types

On each exam: four questions, one of each type, worth 40 points and half the score.

Questions4, one of each type
Points10, 12, 10 and 8 (40 in all)
Time95 minutes for all four
Weight50% of each exam's score

What each type asks

  • Mathematical Routines, 10 points: diagram, derive, calculate.
  • Translation Between Representations, 12 points: a diagram, equation and graph that agree.
  • Experimental Design and Analysis, 10 points: plan, linearize, use the slope.
  • Qualitative/Quantitative Translation, 8 points: argue in words, then derive.

Earning each point

  • Start from a fundamental relation, then integrate or differentiate.
  • Write the limits on every integral.
  • Answer every part; later parts still score after a slip.

Question 1
LpivotM
A uniform rod of mass M and length L hangs from a frictionless pivot at one end. It is held horizontal and released from rest. What is its angular speed as it swings through the vertical?
Question 2
A 0.50 m metal bar moves at a constant 4.0 m/s along frictionless rails joined by a 2.0 Ω resistor, as shown. A uniform 0.30 T magnetic field points into the page. What force must be applied to the bar to keep it moving at constant speed?
