The QCE General Maths external exam
The external examination is two papers on Units 3 and 4. Paper 1, worth 30%, has short response and multiple-choice questions in simple familiar settings. Paper 2, worth 20%, has short response questions in complex familiar and complex unfamiliar settings. Each has 5 minutes perusal and 90 minutes working.
| Paper 1 | Short response and multiple choice, 30% |
|---|---|
| Paper 2 | Short response, 20% |
| Each paper | 5 minutes perusal, 90 minutes working |
| Allowed | A scientific calculator and the formula book |
Simple familiar, complex familiar, complex unfamiliar
Simple familiar questions show the procedure in the way they are asked. Complex familiar questions join several ideas, sometimes from different topics. Complex unfamiliar questions do not say which procedure to use, in a setting you have not practised. Across the examination, about 60% of the marks are simple familiar, 20% complex familiar and 20% complex unfamiliar.
What you may use
A QCAA-approved scientific calculator, and the formula book, which is provided. No notes. A scientific calculator's statistics mode gives Pearson's correlation coefficient and the least-squares line from raw data; financial questions are worked with the formulas.
How to use the 90 minutes
- Use the perusal time to find the questions that join two topics, and plan where to start.
- Work each multiple-choice question out before you look at the options: the wrong options are the answers common slips give.
- In short response, show the method: the formula with its values, the steps of an algorithm, the rounding the question asks.
