Physical Setting/Physics and Physical Science: Physics

The new Regents Examination in Physical Science: Physics was first given in June 2026. Physical Setting/Physics is given for the last time in June 2027, so take the exam that matches the course you were taught.

What the new exam looks like

  • 45 to 55 one-credit questions in 9 to 11 clusters, each built on a phenomenon.
  • About 60% multiple choice and 40% constructed response.
  • Six topics, from Structure and Properties of Matter to Engineering, Technology, and the Applications of Science.

What carries over

Much of the physics is familiar: motion and forces, momentum, energy, circuits, waves and light. The new exam asks you to use it, reading data, building models and supporting claims, in clusters around one phenomenon.

A student measures the electrostatic force between two small charged spheres at three center-to-center distances (table, an invented data set). Next, the charge on each sphere is doubled, and the spheres are placed 3.0 cm apart. If the pattern in the table holds, what is the magnitude of the force each sphere now exerts on the other?
Question 2
A laser beam strikes a flat plane mirror. The beam makes an angle of 35 degrees with the mirror's surface. What is the angle between the reflected beam and the normal to the mirror?
