The four topics

  • Monitoring the environment: greenhouse gases and ocean acidity, nitrogen oxides and ozone, concentration units and titrations, chromatography, electron configurations and atomic absorption spectroscopy.
  • Managing chemical processes: rates of reaction and collision theory, equilibrium and Kc, Le Chatelier's principle, and choosing conditions for industrial production.
  • Organic and biological chemistry: alcohols, aldehydes and ketones, carbohydrates, carboxylic acids, amines, esters, amides, triglycerides, and amino acids and proteins.

How the subject is assessed

  • School assessment, 70%: an investigations folio (30%) and skills and applications tasks (40%).
  • The external examination, 30%: one 130-minute paper set on all four topics.
  • Stage 1 Chemistry is assumed background, so moles, bonding, intermolecular forces, acids and bases and redox appear inside Stage 2 questions.

A student's titration results are shown in the table. Titres within 0.10 mL of each other are concordant. What is the mean concordant titre?
Question 2
A student in Mount Gambier warms 2-methylbutan-2-ol, CH₃CH₂C(OH)(CH₃)CH₃, with acidified potassium dichromate solution. Which statement is correct?

Questions people ask

How many topics are in Stage 2 Chemistry?

Four: monitoring the environment, managing chemical processes, organic and biological chemistry, and managing resources.

Is Stage 1 Chemistry needed?

Stage 2 builds on it. Moles, bonding, intermolecular forces, acids and bases and redox from Stage 1 are used throughout Stage 2 questions.
