The SACE Mathematical Methods exam
The examination is 30% of the subject: 130 minutes and 100 marks, in two question booklets of 50 marks with about 65 minutes for each. A graphics calculator is allowed throughout, with two A4 sheets of handwritten notes and a formula sheet. There are no multiple-choice questions.
| The examination | 130 minutes, 100 marks, 30% of the subject |
|---|---|
| Booklets | Two question booklets of 50 marks, about 65 minutes each |
| Allowed | A graphics calculator throughout, two A4 sheets of handwritten notes, a formula sheet |
| Answers | Working shown; three significant figures unless a question says otherwise |
What the questions ask
Problems in parts, from routine skills to analysis and interpretation, and some draw on more than one topic. Show your working and steps of logic, use correct notation, and give answers to three significant figures unless the question says otherwise.
Calculators and notes
An approved graphics calculator is allowed in both booklets; there is no calculator-free part. Use it for binomial and normal probabilities, confidence intervals and numeric solutions, but still write the method: the set-up earns marks. Two unfolded A4 sheets of handwritten notes are allowed, and a formula sheet is provided.
How this course practises it
- Four-option practice for speed and accuracy: the course's own format, since the examination has none.
- Two timed checks of 18 questions in 36 minutes: one worked by hand, so exact work stays sharp, and one with a calculator.
- Short response questions in parts like the examination's, with every answer checked and written justifications read by Mia.

Questions people ask
Is there multiple choice in the SACE Methods exam?
No. Every question is a problem in parts with working shown. The four-option questions in this course are practice, and the pages say so.
Can I use a calculator in the whole exam?
Yes. An approved graphics calculator may be used in both question booklets.
How much is the exam worth?
30% of the subject result. The school assessment is the other 70%.
