Higher Maths

What is in Higher Maths: the course content

Higher Maths is examined by two papers, both compulsory: Paper 1 without a calculator (55 marks) and Paper 2 with one (65 marks). The skills fall into algebra and trigonometry, geometry, calculus and reasoning, which this course teaches in eight sections.

The eight sections of this course

  • 1 Polynomials and quadratics: the factor theorem, cubic and quartic equations, the discriminant, quadratic inequalities, where lines and curves meet.
  • 2 Functions and graphs: domain and range, composite and inverse functions, related graphs, sketching the derived graph, completing the square.
  • 3 Logarithms, exponentials and sequences: the laws of logs, log and exponential equations, models, straight-line graphs for y = ax^b and y = ab^x, recurrence relations and limits.

Reasoning runs through every paper

Besides the methods, questions ask you to choose a strategy and to explain what an answer means in its context, for example why a limit exists or why a solution is the one that fits.
