Other documents on the list

  • The Conceptual Framework for Financial Reporting.
  • The IFRS Practice Statements on management commentary and on making materiality judgements.
  • For SBR-INT, the high-level differences between ESRS and the ISSB Standards, set out in a table in the examinable documents: enforceability, scope, target users, coverage, materiality approach and assessment, where reports sit, and sector-specific disclosures.

What IFRS 18 changes

IFRS 18 replaces IAS 1, which is not on the list. In the statement of profit or loss, income and expenses are sorted into categories, chiefly operating, investing and financing, with required subtotals for operating profit and for profit before financing and income taxes.

It also sets principles for grouping and splitting information and asks for disclosure of management-defined performance measures, which the SBR study guide names in areas C and E.

Current issues and sustainability reporting

Ulverston Co bought a gas-fired boiler plant on 1 January 2018 for $24m. It was depreciated straight line over 20 years with no residual value. Climate legislation enacted in December 2025 bans plant of this type after 31 December 2029, so at 1 January 2026 Ulverston Co decided to retire the plant on that date, with no residual value. An impairment review at 1 January 2026 found no impairment.

What is the depreciation charge for the plant for the year ended 31 December 2026? Give your answer in $m to one decimal place. (2 marks)

Financial instruments

On 1 January 2026 Langdon Co issued bonds for $20m and, at initial recognition, designated them as at fair value through profit or loss to avoid an accounting mismatch with assets it holds. Interest at the market rate at issue is paid each 31 December. At 31 December 2026 the fair value of the bonds is $18.6m. Of the $1.4m fall, Langdon Co attributes $0.5m to a deterioration in its own credit risk and the rest to a rise in market interest rates. Presenting the own credit effect outside profit or loss would not create an accounting mismatch.

How should Langdon Co recognise the $1.4m fall in the fair value of the bonds for 2026? (2 marks)
