A six-week TMUA revision plan
Use this plan as a six-week cycle alongside the TMUA topic map, practice bank, timing gym and fixed paper pairs. Keep the sessions short enough to review properly. The target is not a perfect streak. It is a growing record of routes you can recognise and mistakes you can block.
Set up the cycle in one sitting
- Choose four or five study sessions per week and one short review session.
- Take a small mixed diagnostic from the practice bank without searching for a topic first.
- Label each miss as knowledge, setup, reasoning, arithmetic, timing or reading.
- Keep one error log. Each entry must end with a replacement action, such as 'write the domain before squaring'.
Do not use a diagnostic percentage as a prediction of an official score. Use it to choose the next lesson, question family or timing drill.
Weeks 1 and 2: rebuild the route
| Week | Main work | Evidence to keep |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Use the topic map to revisit the weakest Paper 1 areas. Pair each short lesson with untimed questions and a written setup. | Three worked routes and a list of facts or techniques that still need retrieval |
| 2 | Add Paper 2 logic, proof, counterexamples and statement direction. Alternate one Paper 1 session with one Paper 2 session. | At least five proof or counterexample audits with the first risky line identified |
- End every session with one question redone from a blank page.
- Use calculator-free arithmetic from the start, not as a final-week add-on.
- When a fact is secure but the route is slow, label the issue setup or fluency rather than relearning the whole topic.
Weeks 3 and 4: add decisions and the clock
| Week | Main work | Evidence to keep |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | Use the timing gym for short Paper 1 and Paper 2 sets. Practise flagging, returning and recording a next step. | A timing log with time spent, decision made and whether the return task worked |
| 4 | Do mixed sets from both papers. Introduce one fixed paper pair or an equivalent two-session rehearsal with the paper timings. | A post-set review grouped by trap family, not only by topic |
Worked example Review the decision, not just the answer
You answer a Paper 1 question correctly after minutes. The result is correct, but the timing log shows that a factorisation route would have taken minutes. Record the faster recognition cue.
A correct answer can still reveal a training target. Keep the original route, the shorter route and the cue that separates them.
Why this works: Review improves both accuracy and decision quality when it names the next reusable move.
Why the tempting route fails: Deleting a correct solution because it was slow removes useful evidence about how the route can improve.
Weeks 5 and 6: rehearse, repair and taper
| Week | Main work | Evidence to keep |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | Complete another paper pair under the current timing. Spend the next session repairing the three most repeated error families. | A short repair set for each repeated family and a revised stop rule |
| 6 | Alternate light mixed sets with one final rehearsal. Revisit formulas, proof moves and arithmetic patterns from the error log. | A one-page checklist of representations, checks and pacing decisions |
- Do not add a new topic because it feels productive if the error log shows a repeated old trap.
- Keep the final rehearsal for evidence, not reassurance. Review it calmly and stop when the checklist is complete.
- Use the last sessions to retrieve, set up and check. Avoid marathon relearning that creates fatigue without a clear next action.
A repeatable weekly template
| Session | Job | Suggested output |
|---|---|---|
| A | Learn or retrieve one topic | One compact method card and two examples |
| B | Solve an untimed focused set | Full working and one alternative route |
| C | Practise Paper 2 reasoning or arithmetic fluency | A proof audit, counterexample or exact-calculation list |
| D | Use the timing gym | A stop decision and a return decision for each flag |
| E | Mixed practice and review | Three error-log entries rewritten as checks |
