The method
- Note the subject and words like all, only, more or always.
- Find the sentence that answers it.
- Decide: supported, contradicted or not settled.
Missing is not the same as false
Worked example A library pilot
Passage: 'Three of the city's eight libraries piloted Sunday opening in April. At those three, combined weekly visits were 12% higher than in March. The report did not measure whether visitors previously used other branches. No decision about extending the pilot has been made.' Claim: Sunday opening increased total visits across all eight libraries.
Why this works: Can't Tell. The rise was at three branches, and visitors may have moved from others. The city-wide total is not settled.
Why the tempting route fails: True stretches three branches to the whole city. False claims more than the passage shows.
'Every library piloted Sunday opening' is False: only three did.
Beat the clock: 30 seconds a question
Verbal Reasoning gives you 22 minutes for 44 questions: 30 seconds each, reading included. Read the question first, then hunt for its key word in the passage.
Worked example A clock check
You are 11 minutes into Verbal Reasoning and on question 18. Are you ahead or behind?
Why this works: Behind. At 30 seconds a question, 11 minutes should be question 22. Answer the next hard one with your best guess, flag it and move on.
Why the tempting route fails: Re-reading the passage to be certain spends the time the last questions need. An unanswered question scores nothing.
