Section I: multiple choice

  • 55 questions in 1 hour 20 minutes, 50% of the score, about 87 seconds a question.
  • About 30 are individual questions with no stimulus, usually applying a concept to a short scenario or comparing institutions.
  • The rest come in sets on a source: quantitative (a table, chart or map of data), qualitative (a primary or secondary text) or visual (a cartoon, map or infographic).

Section II: four free-response questions

  • Concept Application, 3 points: respond to a political scenario, describing and explaining the effects of an institution, behavior or process.
  • Quantitative Analysis, 4 points: identify data, describe a trend, draw a conclusion and explain how the data relate to a principle, institution, process, policy or behavior.
  • SCOTUS Comparison, 4 points: compare a Supreme Court case you have not studied with one of the 14 required cases.
  • Argument Essay, 6 points: a defensible claim supported by evidence from the required foundational documents and course concepts, with a rebuttal of another view.
  • Each is 12.5% of the score. Plan about 20 minutes for each of the first three and 40 for the essay.

The five units

The multiple choice is weighted by unit. Unit 2, the three branches and the bureaucracy, is the largest at 25–36%.

  • Unit 1: Foundations of American Democracy, 15–22%
  • Unit 2: Interactions Among Branches of Government, 25–36%
  • Unit 3: Civil Liberties and Civil Rights, 13–18%
  • Unit 4: American Political Ideologies and Beliefs, 10–15%
  • Unit 5: Political Participation, 20–27%
