AP Statistics Unit 5 review

Unit 5 is 10–20% of Section I, and one shared-context set of three questions on each exam is about regression.

Topics5.1 to 5.5

Interpretations to know

  • Slope: for each one-unit increase in x, predicted y changes by b.
  • Residual: actual minus predicted.
  • r²: the fraction of variation in y explained by the line.
  • Extrapolation beyond the data is risky.

Question 1
The correlation between the heights, in inches, and arm spans, in inches, of 30 adults is r = 0.88. If both variables are converted to centimeters, what is the new correlation?
Question 2
For a sample of used cars, the least-squares line predicting price (in dollars) from age (in years) is: predicted price = 21,400 − 1,650(age). What does the slope mean?
Question 3
A residual plot for a linear model shows a clear U-shaped pattern: positive residuals at both ends and negative ones in the middle. What does this indicate?
