Qualifying is not an offer
Being deemed selective means a Bexley grammar school can consider your child. It does not give a place. In 2025, 5,866 children sat the test and 2,070 were deemed selective. Each school then ranks the selective children who applied, and for most places that means distance.
The four schools
| School | Intake | Places, Sept 2027 | Preferences, 2026 entry | Last distance offered, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Beths Grammar School | Boys | 192 | 1,035 | 6.665 miles |
| Bexley Grammar School | Mixed | 210 | 1,403 | 1.847 miles |
| Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar School | Mixed | 192 | 1,439 | 3.086 miles |
| Townley Grammar School | Girls | 224 | 920 | 7.076 miles |
Preferences are the figures Bexley's 2027/28 booklet gives for 2026 entry. The schools' own policies add up to 818 places; Bexley's test page says 800. Distances are straight-line, from Bexley's 2027/28 admissions booklet.
Questions parents ask
My child passed the Bexley 11+. Why is there no grammar school place?
Passing, which Bexley calls being deemed selective, only makes a child eligible. In 2025, 5,866 children sat the test and 2,070 were deemed selective, for about 800 places. Each grammar school then ranks the selective children who applied by its own rules, and for most places that is straight-line distance from home.
What is the Bexley selective score?
It is set each year by the council with the four grammar schools, after marking, so it is not published in advance. The score is a total age-standardised score: 50% verbal, 25% numerical and 25% non-verbal. The average is 200, and about two-thirds of children score between 170 and 230.
What is the Bexley top 180 rule?
The 180 children with the highest scores are put in one of the highest priority groups at their preferred Bexley grammar school. The score that makes the top 180 changes each year and is not published. At Beths it comes straight after looked-after children. At Bexley Grammar, Chislehurst and Sidcup and Townley it comes after looked-after children and the pupil premium places.
Does Bexley have grammar school catchment areas?
No. Bexley says there is no catchment area, but distance still decides most places. On offer day in 2026 the last place given by distance was: Beths 6.665 miles, Bexley Grammar 1.847 miles, Chislehurst and Sidcup 3.086 miles, Townley 7.076 miles. These figures move every year.
Does the order of my school preferences matter?
Schools do not see your order. Each school ranks every applicant by its own rules. If more than one school can offer, you get the one you ranked highest. Bexley residents can list up to six schools, and should include an all-ability school.
Can my child get a Bexley grammar place without being deemed selective?
Only in limited ways. Places left after the first round go to children one mark below the selective score, then two marks below. Beths goes further down its reserve list, one mark at a time, and has historically not gone below 212. Beths can also consider boys selective in the Kent (Dartford) test who are within 5 marks. Townley can go down to 2% below the selective score for pupil premium girls if its 20 pupil premium places are not filled. A primary headteacher can ask for a review, which changes decisions only in exceptional circumstances.
Is it worth appealing for a Bexley grammar school?
Few appeals succeed. For 2026 entry: Beths 55 heard, 1 upheld; Bexley Grammar 29 heard, 0 upheld; Chislehurst and Sidcup 38 heard, 1 upheld; Townley 23 heard, 0 upheld. Bexley's timetable gives 13 April 2027, 4pm as the deadline for lodging an appeal.
When do Bexley 11+ results come out, and when do I apply?
Results come by email in early October 2026; Bexley has not confirmed the day. Apply by 31 October 2026, 11.59pm. Offers arrive on the evening of Monday 1 March 2027.

How we work this out
What it does
Being deemed selective lets a Bexley grammar school consider your child; each school's own rules decide the offer. Choose the result, the school and your situation to see where your child sits in that school's order, the distances offered before and the next step.
