Is there a passing score on the DAT?
No. The ADA sets no passing score for the DAT: each dental program decides what it treats as an acceptable score. Scores run from 200 to 600, and the ADA's percentile table shows how yours compares with other candidates.
| Passing score | None: each dental program sets its own standard |
|---|---|
| Scale | 200 to 600 in 10-point steps |
| Academic Average 400 | 54th percentile |
| Academic Average 450 | 85th percentile |
| Academic Average 500 | 97th percentile |
What counts as a good score
Because there is no pass mark, a good score is one that is competitive at the schools you apply to. The ADA recommends reading your scores against its percentile table. The ADA's own example: a program that used to ask for an Academic Average of 18 on the old scale could ask for about 390 on the new one.
Scale scores are not the number of questions right and are not percentiles: the ADA equates forms so scores mean the same across versions of the test. Some questions are unscored trial questions that look the same as the rest, and there is no penalty for guessing.
