The Spelling Bee

Every night for three weeks, Grandpa Teodoro quizzed me at the kitchen table. He read each word slowly, tapping the table once for every syllable, and he never let me peek at the list. When I missed “rhythm” for the fourth time, I pushed my chair back and announced that I was done with spelling forever.

He didn’t argue. He just slid the list across the table and went to wash the dishes. After a while I picked it up. I wrote “rhythm” ten times in the margin, then ten more, until the strange letters stopped looking strange.

On the day of the bee, I went out in the third round on “necessary,” a word I had spelled correctly every single night. I expected to feel terrible. Instead, walking off the stage, I spotted Grandpa in the back row, tapping his knee once for every syllable of the next girl’s word. He grinned at me as if I had won.

Questions people ask

Is the test about reading passages or about teaching reading?

Both. Some questions follow passages, and many ask what a teacher should know, such as how sounds and letters work or how children's writing develops.

What score do I need to pass?

Each state sets its own passing score and chooses which tests it requires. Check with your state's educator licensing office, your program, or the ETS Praxis website.
