The following poem was written for this course. In it, a woman remembers learning to drive.

Look where you want to go, not at the wall,
my mother told me in the empty lot.
The wheel goes where the eyes go, after all.
That January, after the third squall,
5the closed mall's acres lay there white and flat.
Look where you want to go, not at the wall.
I braked. We slid. The brick grew wide and tall,
and I forgot whatever I'd been taught.
The wheel goes where the eyes go, after all.
10She didn't grab the wheel. She didn't call
my name. Two fingers turned my chin. Like that.
Look where you want to go, not at the wall.
These days I drive her. Tuesdays, since the fall,
to the third floor at Mercy, the same slot.
15The wheel goes where the eyes go, after all.
I watch the road, and not her hands, how small
they've gotten, twisting the strap into a knot.
Look where you want to go, not at the wall.
The wheel goes where the eyes go, after all.
