How hard is the CFP exam?
It is long and it is applied. You answer 170 questions over two 3-hour sections, many of them on client scenarios and multi-page case studies, and CFP Board says the exam stresses critical thinking and problem solving over recall. About two in three candidates pass each window.
| Questions | 170 multiple choice |
|---|---|
| Time | Two 3-hour sections of 85 |
| Scoring | 1 point each, pass or fail on the total |
| Windows | March, July and November |
| First-time pass rate | 65% to 72% since March 2024 |
What makes it hard
- Breadth: eight domains, from ethics and insurance to tax, retirement and estate planning, with Retirement Savings and Income Planning the largest at 18%.
- Integration: case studies run several pages with about 8 to 12 questions each, and one client's facts can test tax, retirement and estate planning at once.
- Calculation: questions may involve time value of money, uneven cash flows and IRR, so you bring a financial calculator and need to be quick with it.
- Endurance: two 3-hour sections with a 40-minute break between them. Once you finish a subsection you cannot go back to it.
What makes it easier
The exam rewards a steady method: find the client's goal and constraint, name the rule that applies, and choose the recommendation that serves the client first. Practicing scenario questions against that method, and getting fast at the calculator work, pays off more than memorizing more facts.
