How to write the Section IV extended response

Choose one of two questions, each on a different HSC topic, and write about 800 words. Evaluate means a judgement: strategies weighed for a business, with reasons.

A plan for 20 marks

  • An introduction that answers the question in one sentence and names the strategies or influences you will discuss.
  • A paragraph for each strategy: what it is, how it works for a business, its benefit and its limitation, with an example business.
  • Links between topics where they help: the finance cost of an operations strategy, the human resources effect of a marketing one.

Evaluate is a judgement

A description of strategies, however full, stays in the middle of the range. Say how effective each is, for whom and under what conditions, and finish with a judgement you justify.

Questions people ask

Should I use a real business?

Use the business the question gives, or a case study you have studied in class. Accurate, relevant detail helps more than a famous name.

How should I choose between the two questions?

Pick the topic where you can name and evaluate three strategies with examples; decide in reading time.
