IGCSE English as a Second Language

0510 or 0511: what is the difference?

Both have the same Reading and Writing paper and the same Listening paper. The difference is Speaking.

0511Speaking counts towards the grade: Reading and Writing 50%, Listening 25%, Speaking 25%
0510Speaking is a separate endorsement, not part of the grade
GradesA* to G for both

What is the same

The Reading and Writing paper is the same: six exercises in 2 hours for 60 marks. So is the Listening paper: five exercises of multiple-choice questions in about 50 minutes. Everything in this course is for that Reading and Writing paper, whichever code you are entered for.

What is different

With 0511, your Speaking test (an interview, a short talk and a discussion, about 10 to 15 minutes) counts for a quarter of the grade. With 0510, Speaking is reported separately, so your grade comes from Reading and Writing and Listening.

Which one am I taking?

Ask your school or exam centre. They choose the code when they enter you.
