IGCSE English as a Second Language

Exercise 6: the more formal piece

A more formal piece of 120 to 160 words, such as an article for a school magazine, a report for a teacher, an essay or a review. Also worth 15 marks.

Length120 to 160 words
Marks15: content 6, language 9
Text typesArticle, report, essay or review

Know the text type

  • Article: a title, an opening that interests the reader, and your view on the topic
  • Report: written for someone such as a head teacher, with facts about what happened and a recommendation
  • Essay: an introduction, reasons and examples on each side or for your view, and a conclusion
  • Review: what you experienced, what was good or less good, and whether you recommend it

Using the comments in the task

The task often gives two short comments from other people. You can use their ideas or your own, but put them in your own words and add your own reasons and examples.

Next step

How formal should it be?

More formal than the email: full sentences, no slang, and a tone that suits the named reader, such as a teacher or the readers of a school magazine.
