The 20 syllabus units

  • Physical chemistry: some basic concepts in chemistry; atomic structure; chemical bonding and molecular structure; chemical thermodynamics; solutions; equilibrium; redox reactions and electrochemistry; chemical kinetics.
  • Inorganic chemistry: classification of elements and periodicity in properties; p-block elements; d- and f-block elements; coordination compounds.
  • Organic chemistry: purification and characterisation of organic compounds; some basic principles of organic chemistry; hydrocarbons; organic compounds containing halogens; organic compounds containing oxygen; organic compounds containing nitrogen; biomolecules; principles related to practical chemistry.

The practical chemistry unit

Unit 20 asks for the chemistry behind laboratory work: detecting nitrogen, sulphur and halogens and the hydroxyl, carbonyl, carboxyl and amino groups; preparing Mohr's salt, potash alum, acetanilide, p-nitroacetanilide, aniline yellow and iodoform; acid-base titrations and titrations of oxalic acid and Mohr's salt against KMnO₄; salt analysis for ten listed cations and eight listed anions; and four experiments, from the enthalpy of solution of CuSO₄ to the reaction of iodide ions with hydrogen peroxide.

How this course maps the units

The course groups the 20 units into ten sections, each with two lessons, Section A practice, Section B practice and its share of the two timed papers. Set the planner above with the weeks you have left and how sure you are of each section, and it splits your hours.

Question 1Section A: multiple choice
50 mL50\ \mathrm{mL} of 0.20 mol L−10.20\ \mathrm{mol\,L^{-1}} BaCl₂ solution is mixed with 50 mL50\ \mathrm{mL} of 0.30 mol L−10.30\ \mathrm{mol\,L^{-1}} Na₂SO₄ solution, and BaSO₄ precipitates completely. Taking the volumes as additive, what is the concentration of sulphate ions left in the solution?
Question 2Section A: multiple choice
