Questions people ask

How long is each LSAT section?

35 minutes. There are four sections: two scored Logical Reasoning, one scored Reading Comprehension and one unscored section of either type.

Is there a break during the LSAT?

Yes, one: a 10-minute intermission between the second and third sections. You must take the full 10 minutes; the third section starts when it ends.

How many questions are on the LSAT?

It varies a little by form. The April 2025 form LSAC published had 77 scored questions: 25 in each Logical Reasoning section and 27 in Reading Comprehension. The unscored section comes on top.

How much time do you get per question on the LSAT?

About 1 minute 24 seconds in Logical Reasoning (25 questions in 35 minutes) and 1 minute 18 seconds in Reading Comprehension (27 questions), on the April 2025 form.

How long is LSAT Argumentative Writing?

50 minutes: 15 for prewriting analysis and 35 to write the essay. You take it online, separately from the multiple-choice test, as early as eight days before your test date.

Do all four LSAT sections count toward your score?

No. Three are scored. The fourth tries out new questions and can be Logical Reasoning or Reading Comprehension at any point in the test, so treat every section as if it counts.

How we work this out

What it does

The test section by section, with a 35-minute timer to practice on.

The LSAT® at standard time: the multiple-choice test and the separate Argumentative Writing task.

Method

  1. Section and intermission times are LSAC's: four 35-minute sections with a 10-minute intermission between the second and third.
  2. The 3-hour figure is LSAC's own approximate length for standard test takers. Testing itself is 2 hours 20 minutes.
  3. Argumentative Writing is 50 minutes, 15 to plan and 35 to write, taken online on a separate day.
  4. The pace for one section uses the April 2025 form LSAC published: 25 questions in each Logical Reasoning section and 27 in Reading Comprehension.
