The UKMLA AKT at a glance
- 200 questions. Two papers of 100, sat on consecutive days.
- 2 hours a paper. Reasonable adjustments change your own timings.
- Single best answer. Each question has 5 options, and wrong answers lose no marks.
- Results within about 5 weeks. The MLA is pass or fail, and you also get your AKT score.
How the AKT pass mark is set
- Several papers each year. Different medical schools sit different AKT papers, all built to the same MLA content map.
- A standard for every question. Panels of assessment experts from UK medical schools set each question’s standard, so the mark you need depends on the paper you sit.
- The same chance of passing. The papers are balanced so a candidate is as likely to pass whichever paper they get.
- PLAB 1 is the international route. The GMC’s PLAB 1 meets the same MLA requirements for doctors who qualified abroad.
