How the range is worked out

  1. Each section is marked out of its questions.
  2. We add one right and one wrong answer to each section, so a short section never claims a perfect or a zero mark, and show one standard error either side, rounded out to 5%.
  3. The overall mark counts each section equally, as the real test does.
  4. NSW gives each child a band for each part, not a mark, and publishes no cut-off. This mark is our practice measure, not an NSW result.
  5. A few questions a section give a wide range. A full trial test narrows it.

Questions

Is this an official Selective test?

No. The questions are our own, written to the Selective test's format and pace, and each answer was checked by independent solvers. NSW has its own online practice tests on the Department's website.

What is in the real Selective test?

It has four parts: Reading (38 answers in 45 minutes), Mathematical Reasoning (35 questions in 40 minutes), Thinking Skills (40 questions in 40 minutes) and one Writing task (30 minutes). It is sat on a computer at an allocated NSW centre, with no calculator.

How long does this take?

20 minutes: reading 7, maths 7 and thinking skills 6.

Do we need an account?

No. The mark and the weakest skill show straight away. A free account adds the skills to fix first, a two-week plan and every answer explained, and keeps them.

What mark does my child need?

NSW publishes no pass mark or cut-off. Offers depend on everyone's results, your school choices and the places. Use the mark to compare your child with themselves over time.
