How the English points work
Home Affairs looks at each of your four skill scores, not your overall score. Every skill must reach the level's minimum: one low skill holds the whole result at the level below.
For tests taken from 7 August 2025, writing and speaking need the highest scores at every level. Tests taken on or before 6 August 2025 use the older scores of 50, 65 and 79 in each skill, and may be used until 6 August 2028 depending on the visa.
The rest of the points test
The calculator adds the other rows of the points tables for the Skilled Independent (189), Skilled Nominated (190) and Skilled Work Regional (491) visas: age, skilled work, qualifications, Australian study, partner and nomination. Points for skilled work inside and outside Australia together stop at 20.

For a test taken on or before 6 August 2025, 79 in every skill met Superior English: 20 points. For a test from 7 August 2025, Superior needs 69 listening, 70 reading, 85 writing and 88 speaking, so 79 each meets Proficient English: 10 points.
What PTE score gives 20 points?
Superior English: at least 69 in listening, 70 in reading, 85 in writing and 88 in speaking, for tests from 7 August 2025.
What PTE score gives 10 points?
Proficient English: at least 58 in listening, 59 in reading, 69 in writing and 76 in speaking, for tests from 7 August 2025.
Does the overall PTE score count?
Not for these levels. Home Affairs sets a minimum in each of the four skills.
