QCE Mathematical Methods Units 3 and 4

The external examination

The external assessment is set and marked by the QCAA and is worth 50%: Paper 1 and Paper 2, 25% each. The QCAA provides the QCAA Mathematical Methods formula book in both papers.

Paper 1 and Paper 2

  • Technology-free

Paper 1 5 minutes perusal and 90 minutes working time; 25%.

Short response and multiple choice questions on Units 3 and 4, with assumed knowledge from Units 1 and 2. Technology-free: no notes, calculators, technology or other resources.

  • Technology-active

Paper 2 5 minutes perusal and 90 minutes working time; 25%.

Short response and multiple choice questions on Units 3 and 4, with assumed knowledge from Units 1 and 2. Technology-active: a QCAA-approved graphics calculator (no CAS functionality) and/or a QCAA-approved scientific calculator; no notes or other resources.

Question specifications: simple familiar 60%, complex familiar 20% and complex unfamiliar 20% of the marks (each plus or minus 2%). The syllabus does not give either paper's marks or number of questions.

How the course practises them

  • Paper 1. 59 multiple choice and 70 short response questions without a calculator, exact working by hand, each step marked on its own marking guide.

  • Paper 2. 50 multiple choice and 49 short response questions with a calculator, each step marked, with follow-through from earlier parts.

  • Multiple choice. Four options; each wrong option says which slip it catches.

  • Two timed papers. Timed paper 1 follows Paper 1 with 10 multiple choice questions and 52 marks of short response in 90 minutes, free with an account; timed paper 2 follows Paper 2 with 10 multiple choice questions and 53 marks of short response in 90 minutes. Our practice structure, not a QCAA rule: 10 multiple choice questions and about 50 marks of short response in 90 minutes.

Internal assessment is set by your school: a problem-solving and modelling task (20%) and two short response examinations (15% each). It is described in a lesson rather than practised here.
