How to answer the Regents ELA reading questions
Three texts and 24 four-choice questions. The questions ask about central ideas and themes, how characters and ideas develop, what words and figurative language mean in context, and how structure and point of view shape a text.
| Texts | One literary text, one poem, one nonfiction text |
|---|---|
| Questions | 24, four choices each |
| Credits | 24 |
| Here | Timed checks with eight questions on each kind of text |
Read for the whole, answer from the lines
- Read each text through before the questions, and note where it shifts: a turn in a poem, a change in a character, a new step in an argument.
- Go back to the lines a question names. The right answer is supported by the text; a wrong one is often true of the text but does not answer the question.
- For a word in context, try each choice in the sentence and keep the one that fits its tone as well as its meaning.

Questions people ask
Are the texts past Regents passages?
No. The texts here are public-domain works, quoted exactly, or passages written for practice, and every question is original.
