Universities are being pressed to publish the average earnings of their graduates five years after leaving. Supporters say applicants deserve to know what a degree is worth. The figures, however, are compiled from tax records that cannot see who is working part time by choice, who has emigrated, or who has taken a low-paid job in a field they wanted. A course that sends most of its graduates into museum work will always look worse than one that feeds accountancy firms, whatever the teaching is like. Publishing the tables would therefore not tell applicants what they think they are being told, and would push departments to steer students toward whichever careers happened to pay.
