ACCUPLACER

ACCUPLACER math practice

There are three ACCUPLACER math tests: Arithmetic, QAS and AAF. Each has 20 multiple-choice questions, and your college picks the one that matches the course you want.

ArithmeticFractions, decimals, percents, whole numbers, comparing values
QASRatios, exponents, linear equations, statistics, geometry
AAFQuadratics, functions, logs, radicals, trigonometry

What each test covers

  • Arithmetic: whole number, fraction and decimal operations, percent (of a number, increase and decrease), and comparing values written as fractions, decimals and percents.
  • QAS: rational numbers, ratios and proportions, exponents and scientific notation, algebraic expressions, linear equations and inequalities, linear graphs, probability, descriptive statistics and geometry.
  • AAF: linear equations and graphs, factoring, quadratics, functions, radical and rational equations, polynomials, exponential and logarithmic equations, geometry and trigonometry.

Which one will you take

Your college decides, from the course you plan to take. At Palm Beach State College, QAS places students up to College Algebra and Statistics and AAF places them into Precalculus and Calculus; Minnesota State uses AAF for College Algebra. Check your college's placement page, then study that test first.

How to win points

Write the question's goal before you calculate. In percent change, divide by the starting amount; in an equation, do the same step to both sides; with a graph, read the axes before the line. Work by hand, because only some questions show a calculator.

Questions people ask

What math is on the ACCUPLACER?

Arithmetic up to percents on the Arithmetic test, algebra 1 and basic statistics on QAS, and algebra 2, functions and trigonometry on AAF. Your college picks which test you take.

Do I need to take all three math tests?

Not always. Your college chooses by the course you want, and some move you from one test to the next by your score.

What score do I need on the ACCUPLACER math test?

Your college sets it. Palm Beach State College places QAS scores of 276 or higher into College Algebra, and Western Kentucky University places QAS scores of 250 or higher into its standard first math courses.
