The AFQT score, explained

The AFQT is a percentile from 1 to 99 built from four ASVAB subtests. It compares you with a national sample of 18 to 23 year olds.

What the number means

An AFQT of 62 means you scored as well as or better than 62% of the reference sample. It is not a percentage of questions right.

The official categories

  • Category I: 93 to 99
  • Category II: 65 to 92
  • Category IIIA: 50 to 64
  • Category IIIB: 31 to 49
  • Category IVA: 21 to 30
  • Category IVB: 16 to 20
  • Category IVC: 10 to 15
  • Category V: 1 to 9

Where to put your effort

  • Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension combine into one verbal score, and it carries extra weight.
  • Arithmetic Reasoning is word problems; most lost marks are setup errors, not arithmetic.
  • Mathematics Knowledge rewards a short list of rules learned well: equations, exponents, area and angles.

Is the AFQT a separate test?

No. There is one exam, the ASVAB. Four of its tests are combined to compute the AFQT.

How long is an AFQT score valid?

ASVAB scores can be used for enlistment for up to two years from the date of testing.

Does your practice test give my real AFQT?

No. Our percentile is an estimate from practice questions. Only the official ASVAB gives an AFQT.
