A four-step plan

  • Take a diagnostic across all four subtests and note the weakest one.
  • Do the lesson for its weakest skill, then fresh questions on it.
  • Practice each subtest at the real pace: about 36 seconds a Word Knowledge question, more for math.
  • Take a full timed test, review every miss, and repeat for the next weakest subtest.

On test day

  • Answer every question: the computer test scores unfinished questions as if answered at random, as a penalty
  • Bring no calculator: none is allowed
  • You cannot go back to an earlier subtest

Questions people ask

How long should I study for the ASVAB?

It depends on your starting point. A diagnostic shows where the gap is, so the time goes to the subtest that costs you most.

Which subtests matter most for the AFQT?

All four count. The two verbal subtests together carry extra weight.
