Data drill
Calculators are not allowed in the testing room. Practice the arithmetic by hand, one fresh question at a time.
Work it out on paper first, as on exam day, then check.
The four calculations
| Measure | How | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Rate | Count ÷ time observed | 12 hits in 90 minutes: 12 ÷ 1.5 hours = 8 per hour |
| Percentage of intervals | Intervals scored ÷ intervals observed × 100 | 14 of 40 intervals: 35% |
| Mean duration | Total duration ÷ number of episodes | 3 tantrums totaling 6 minutes: 2 minutes each |
| Percent correct | Correct trials ÷ trials × 100 | 9 of 12 trials: 75% |
Then the whole exam
The free diagnostic has 15 questions across all six domains and takes 16 minutes. No account. You get your score in each domain and a short lesson on the one to fix first.
Questions people ask
How do you calculate rate per hour?
Divide the count by the hours observed. 15 occurrences in a 90-minute session is 15 ÷ 1.5 = 10 per hour. To get the rate per minute, divide by the minutes instead.
How do you calculate the percentage of intervals?
Divide the intervals scored by the intervals observed and multiply by 100. With 10-second intervals over 5 minutes there are 30 intervals; 12 scored is 40%.
What is the difference between duration and mean duration?
Duration is how long one episode lasts, from onset to offset. Mean duration is the total time across all episodes divided by the number of episodes.
Can you use a calculator on the RBT exam?
No. The RBT Handbook lists calculators among the items not allowed in the testing room. A dry-erase board is provided.
