A client removes her dentures to sleep. Where should the nurse aide put them after cleaning?
The Pennsylvania CNA exam
Pennsylvania uses the NNAAP exam for its Nurse Aide Registry. The written (or oral) exam can be taken online or at a test center, in English or Spanish; the skills evaluation is only at a test center.
| Written exam | 70 multiple-choice questions: 60 scored, 10 unscored |
|---|---|
| Time | 2 hours |
| Fee | $135 for both parts |
| Window | 2 years from finishing your training program |
Who can test
You must be at least 16, pass a criminal background check, and have completed a nurse aide training program approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education within the last 24 months. Aides whose registration lapsed, in Pennsylvania or another state, can test under their own routes.
Retakes
Fail either part three times and you must complete another training program and retake both parts. A candidate testing because their registration lapsed gets only one attempt. A retake costs $50 for the written or oral exam and $85 for the skills evaluation.
Skills not tested in Pennsylvania
The Pennsylvania handbook marks two of the 23 skills as not tested in the state: helping a client use a bedpan, and measuring blood pressure with an electronic machine.
Staying on the registry
To stay listed you must work as a nurse aide for pay, in an approved facility, at least one documented day of eight consecutive hours in every 24 months.

Many nurse aides go on to nursing programs, which often ask for an entrance test. We have courses for the two most common ones.
