CompTIA A+

A+ passing score

Core 1 passes at 675 and Core 2 at 700, on a scale of 100 to 900. The score is scaled, so it is not a percentage of questions right.

Why it is not a percentage

CompTIA converts your answers to a scaled score and does not publish the conversion. Questions can carry different weight, and performance-based questions can be worth more than one multiple-choice question.

So any calculator that turns 675 into a number of questions right is guessing. We show your share right by domain instead, and never a scaled score.

What to aim for in practice

  • Aim to be comfortably right in every domain, not just on average: a weak heavy domain costs a lot.
  • Troubleshooting (Core 1) and operating systems and security (Core 2) carry the most weight.
  • Answer every question. A wrong answer costs nothing, so a blank is a certain zero.

Questions people ask

What percentage do you need to pass A+?

CompTIA does not publish one. The pass marks are scaled scores: 675 for Core 1 and 700 for Core 2 out of 900.

Is there a penalty for wrong answers?

No. Answer every question.

Do I need to pass both exams?

Yes. The A+ certification needs a pass in both Core 1 and Core 2.
